Welcome to the third race of the 2006 New Mexico State Championship Sprint Series.  While the last event focused more heavily on trekking and orienteering, this event should be more challenging in the mountain bike section.  Participants are responsible to bring a canoe/ 2-person kayak, PFDs & paddles, mountain bikes and approved helmets, and running gear.  Bring a whistle, to be attached to your PFD and carried throughout the race.

This course will include a combination of orienteering as well as marked trails.  Bring snacks and plenty of water, as tree cover will be a minimum.  BRING BUG REPELLANT!

Please plan to be to the race area by 8 am, the race will start at 8:30.  You will not be able to contact me at Eagles Nest as my cellular phone does not work up there.  Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, and team points-leader for Series A will be announced.  While you should plan to bring adequate water for the event, we will have water available at the transition point.  Lunch will be provided.

What is a Sprint Adventure Race?

A Sprint Race lasts between 2-3 hours, and the events include paddling, mountain biking, running/trekking, and mystery events.  The running segments are up to 5 miles, the Mt. Biking Segments are up to 7 miles, and the paddling segment can be up to one hour.  Bring your compass as you will need to find points on the map… do not worry as we will go over compass and map prior to the event starting.

What if I am new and am unsure of racing?

Come & give it a try – the events are intended for everyone to finish.

How difficult are the mountain biking segments?  What type of bike will I need, i.e. full suspension or hard-tail?

Mountain biking will be steeper than normal, with a single-track back to the transition.  Either full-suspension or hard-tail bikes would be appropriate.

What will I need to race?

Not too much is required for these races: each racer needs a bike and an approved bike helmet, running shoes, tandem inflatable kayak, paddles, and PFD’s, whistle. (Canoes and hardshell kayaks are allowed – check in with race director).

What if I don’t have a kayak and/or a mountain bike?

Let me know ahead of time and I will see what I can do.

What else will I need?

Food, water, change of clothes, sunscreen, etc.

Will this be part of a three race series?

Yes!  Please check in at http://www.nmarc.org/Sprint_Series.htm for more information.
