Old Pueblo Race [Race Results Main]
February 17, 2007
Tucson, AZ

Well another 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo has gone by. My self and teammate Rich Capener AKA (Dirt Junkies) were in it again. We ended up finishing 6th down 1 spot from last year just missing the podium to two guys that were solo last year in the Duo open this year. This year there were 81 teams in the 2 man division. The course and the top teams were fast this year with first place logging 21 laps. The race started out good with Rich logging a  1:10 first lap not bad considering it had a 1/2 mile run in it for the lemans start. I almost ended my day on the first lap going too fast and getting out of shape over a jump on a rough section on a fast down hill. It was one of those classic I don't know how I pulled that off saves but....Don't do that again (note to self take the left line next lap). The rest of the first lap was uneventful and I clocked a 1:07 lap. Lap two was not so uneventful. I was in a line of people trying to pass a slower rider o! n a tig ht section called the corral trail. It opened up to two lines for about 40 feet me and another rider said two riders passing on the left. The first rider made it by and as I was going by he came back out into my lane and hooked my handle bar with his as I was going by at 20 MPH. Needless to say it was a good crash and I don't know how the guy behind me stopped before running me over. I was aright the bike was a little bent up and the odometer was gone. I pulled out some cactus and straightened out the handle bars and left logging a 1:11 lap...not too bad with a crash. The rest of the race was good and the usual circling the course and trying to recover in the 1:15 till Rich gets back. I unfortunately am always messing around with my eating and drinking trying to find new things to improve my endurance and water replacement. I had a package with my Enervit electrolyte drink get held up in shipping due to snow and had to try something new. I ended up on my 8th lap dehydra! ted wit h massive leg cramps and dry heaving over the bars for about 2 miles. I can think of better ways to ride a bike. Luckily Rich was feeling good and knocked out 2 more laps with us ending up with 18 laps in 24:24:59. Good results we just need to figure out how to get that little more speed and get into the 19 and 20 lap range to be in the thick of it. Also in with 18 laps in 25:15:08 was Team Santa Fe with Gary Johnson and Jan Bear. New Mexico did have a good showing though finishing 1st, 6th, 10th in the mens Duo open and 1st (Team Santa Fe Women) and 3rd in the womens Duo open and 10th and 11th in the 4 person womens open. Well that's it for now next Dirt Junkies race April 14th Dawn Till Dusk in Gallup NM were we will try to improve on last years fourth place finish.   Race results, times, and photos can be seen at www.epicrides.com     - Gavin Flury
