Sprint Race 3 - July 14, 2007- Albuquerque Open Space, NM

Location: Albuquerque Open Space – Start/Finish at picnic shelter at the east end of Menaul
When: Pre-race meeting at 7:00 am, start shortly thereafter (early start to avoid the HEAT)
Length: 3-4 hours
Elements:
1. Trekking/Running with navigation
2. Mountain biking with navigation
3. "Optional" event: rock climb
4. Mystery event

Character of the race: The trekking and mountain biking courses will undoubtedly be fast, maybe even easy, for advanced racers and accessible for novices as well. Trust that even you beginning navigators/orienteers will feel comfortable in this race. In other words, this is NOT the race to let the orienteering scare you away! While you Xterra studs may now be chuckling, thinking you will dominate, we have tossed in a couple of additional challenges to even the playing field just a bit - the winners might just emerge from the hares:

1. Rock climb: All solo racers and one member from each team will have the option of attempting a short, fifth-class rock climbing pitch while being safely belayed from above. The difficulty will be appropriate for the event, but be warned: this will be fifth class. In order to participate in this element, you must provide your own climbing harness (which must be approved by the Race Director during the pre-race meeting) and helmet (biking helmet okay). This element is considered optional in the sense that you will be credited a finishing time even if this element is not completed, however, there will be a significant time bonus for completing it and a time penalty for not bothering to attempt it at all. The time incentives will definitely benefit those who simply try while also reasonably rewarding you rock jocks. For those of you who have a distaste for climbing, you will need to think hard ahead of time whether you think you are so fast that you can skip this element altogether. Hee-hee.

2. Mystery Event: Your VO2 Max of 85 won’t help you here. Then again, it might during your penalty laps should you score poorly in the Mystery Event…..

A complete list of necessary gear and additional information will be provided within a week or so. This race promises to be really different and really fun! As always, there will be a post-race feast and awards ceremony and entertainment provided by Steve Prickett. Contact Brooks Alldredge for more information.  Cost is $45 non-members, $25 members.
