January 13 : Snowshoe/Hike w/ Orienteering
This event is going to include snowshoeing and some basic navigation. It will last approximately 2 hours and will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13th at the 10K Trailhead on the east side of the Sandia Mountains. The event is designed to be fun, some nowshoe, and some navigation to find the orange/white markers. All newcomers will be assigned a mentor if they want one.  Snowshoes will not be provided. Each participant will need to bring their own snowshoes. If you do not own a pair of snowshoes they are available for daily rental at several local shops such as REI, Sportz Outdoor, Sports Systems.  Directions from Albuquerque: take I-40 east to the Tijeras exit and go north on Hwy. 14 (follow signs to the Sandia ski area). Turn left onto the Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway toward the ski area. Pass the ski area and continue until you see a sign for the "10 K Trailhead."  From the turnoff from North 14 towards the ski area to the 10k area it's exactly 11miles.  There is a parking area there where we will convene. What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring snacks and water, or your hydration drink of choice. Bring snowshoes and preferably hiking poles (poles are usually included in the rental package).  If you have a compass and map of the area, bring them. We will provide a rough copy of a map of the area. If you are not a member of the NMARC and wish to join, bring $20 cash or a check. The event is free but there is a $3/car parking fee. Contact David Nicholson with questions or call Steve at (505) 980-9851.

March 3: Hike CCC trail to South Crest

Hike will begin at 7:30 am and cover 6-8 miles depending on which route we use.  This is a Class III hike and we should finish in 2.5 to 3.5 hours.  Bring food and water.  Email Steve Prickett if you're interested.

March 10:  Beginner Training Hike

This will be a 3-4 mile beginner training hike.  That's Class I-II pace for those interested.  This is not a clinic and won't be as educational as Sunday's Trail Running Clinic/event.  We will meet at the Embudito Trailhead (East of Tramway from Manitoba ).  Contac Steve Prickett if you need directions and if you're coming (980-9851 cell).

March 11: Trail Run and Running Clinic

This event and clinic is designed for beginning and intermediate runners who want more benefits from their training – either for better fitness or else race results. Topics of discussion include shoe and gear selection, form, workout types and schedules, periodization and race-specific preparation, injury prevention, and mental training.  The purpose is to provide guidance for mindful training – hopefully, we can exchange experiences and ideas that have worked for each of us.  Afterwards, we'll break into groups according to pace and run in the foothills.  Meet at Copper Avenue Trailhead to Open Space at 11:00 am.   Call Brooks Alldredge at 505-263-0027 for more details.

Weekly Mountain Bike Ride

Every Tueday evening at 6:00 at the top of Spain at the Michael Emery trailhead.  Open ride for all skill levels. Contact Kim Kavasch at 944-6373.

March 31: Beginner Mtn Bike Skills/Ride

Gavin will be putting on a Adventure Racer beginning bike clinic.  For those of you who haven't been to Gavin's clinic's they are the best.  He gives out great handouts and practical advice.  Plan on bringing your Mountain Bike as you will be able to clean and tune it right on the spot.

April 7: Placitas Silver Mine Fun Bike/Hike

This event will be run in a race like format for beginners.  Elements are 3-5 miles of Mountain Biking, 1-2 miles of hiking/Trekking.  There will be navigation included.  All beginners will be paired up with veterans so don't let inexpereince stop you from entering.  We will meet at the park area past the Placitas strip shopping center.  The park area is on the right side of the road.  Cost is $5 per person.  Contact Steve 980-9851

May 20: Bike/Hike Training Event

This event begins at 7:30 am at Bill Wiley's house.  It is a 5 mile run up the Pino trail, 2 miles down the Cienega and approx a 20 mile bike ride from the Cienega trail head back to Bill's house off Tramway and Tramway Terracee.

June 16: Paddling Clinic
A paddling clinic will be held at Cochiti Lake at 9:00 am.  It will last about 2.5 hours. If you need a boat, Steve Prickett has some boats, PFD's, and paddles left over from the Sprint Series #2 race.  This will help you get ready for the August Sprint Race as well. RSVP Steve Prickett or call him at 505-980-9851.

July 3: NMARC Potluck
Bring a friend and email Steve Prickett how many are coming and what you want to bring.  This is a good time to meet the members of the club and swap stories.

July 22: Bike/Run
Sandia Casino/La Luz bike/run to begin at 8:00 a.m. Please RSVP to Deb McFarland .

October 8: NMARC Annual Meeting
The meeting will be to elect/reelect officers and board members to the club then have a free form discussion about Adventure Racing.  Adventure Racers of all levels are invited.  We will cater our free form discussion to whatever is on people's minds.  In past meetings we have discussed:
  • How to get started in Adventure Racing?
  • What is Adventure Racing?
  • What fitness level do I need to have to race?
  • What equipment is needed?
  • Should I buy or borrow equipment to start?
  • Does the club host training events/clinics?

If you have questions email Steve Prickett or call him at 505-980-9851.
