A Race 1- Saturday
April 15, 2006,
Cochiti
Lake, New Mexico
This
was the first race of the 2006 New Mexico State Championship Sprint
Series. This club event evenly focused on paddling,
trekking and orienteering, and mountain biking. Participants were
responsible to bring a canoe/ 2-person kayak, PFDs & paddles,
mountain bikes and approved helmets, and running gear.
The
race started with paddling. The wind was fairly quick that morning
so the teams were allowed to beach their boat after a short paddle
and run along the dam to the first checkpoint.
The
next section was trekking & orienteering along routes and
trails in the Cochiti park area. Teams were given some instructions,
and navigated the course to the required checkpoints. following
trail markings and by using their map and compass.
The
last leg of the race was mountain biking along marked trails.
