Four teams participated in a “sprint
style” race event, held on Sunday July
24. Participants were challenged to a 3mile
trek/ run, 7 mile mountain bike, and 1 mile
paddle in the Tetilla Peak recreational area
of Cochiti Lake. This is the first in a three
event series, organized by Warren and Kate.
The second event will be held Sunday August
21 at Fenton Lake, and the third tentatively
scheduled for October 8, at the Manzano Mountain
Retreat.
Participants in the Cochiti event assembled
their gear in the transition area starting
at 8:30 am, and rules/instructions were given
at 9 am. As the participants traveled the
area that morning, they were in search of
wooden stakes with numbers written on them,
which they need to write down for a mystery
event later. After that the participants were
given five minutes to coordinate before the
starting whistle was blown. First they paddled
to a checkpoint where they retrieved their
first set of numbers, and then they returned
to the transition area. After that they ran
on a jeep road through a marshy area, overgrown
with very tall and bushy plants, in search
of another stake. After finding that stake
they covered most of the roads on that side
of the lake, making a number of loops, and
through that lake and onto a very slam island
approximately 50 feet from shore. Mountain
bikes were used in the next section, taking
them back to the boat launch, and exploring
other roads and the lakes shoreline. Finally,
the participants were instructed to organize
all the number that they were given so that
in correct sequence they indicated a specific
point on their route, to where they needed
to ride their bikes, and identify an object
placed there.
Ryan McHale, a brand new member used his strong
mountain bike background to return first with
the identity of the event, at just over 2
hours. Kim Kavasch, another brand new member,
and Domenic Purpura, followed closely behind
to be the first team of two returning. Forrest
Kenny and Deb McFarland rounded out the group,
shortly thereafter.
After the event we were treated to fresh fruit
kabobs (frozen) and savory chicken and vegetable
kabobs, hot off the grill.
